Absurd experimental comedy from the City of Angels.
Rochester Film Otherworld presents its first screening with 2005’s Shaye Saint John: The Triggers Compilation, a collection of early shorts featuring the hilarious character Shaye Saint John, created by filmmaker Eric Fournier.
Falling somewhere between the queer absurdism of Ryan Trecartin and John Waters and the handmade surrealism of Jan Švankmajer, Fournier’s work—and his performance as Shaye, an entertainer disfigured in a train accident who now wears an elaborate doll costume—originated in the late 1990s as VHS tapes circulated in the Los Angeles underground.
With the rise of YouTube, Fournier brought these videos online, where they cultivated multiple cult followings—both for their chaotic, lo-fi aesthetic and for Shaye Saint John's role as a kind of proto-creepypasta figure on the Internet.
The Triggers Compilation may be seeing its first-ever public screening, and we’re proud to celebrate Fournier’s singular vision here in the city of film.
